Mariner outboard motors were introduced in 1976 as an alternative brand to Mercury, aimed primarily at international markets, especially Europe, Asia, and Australia. Initially, their production was entrusted to Yamaha, but by the early 1980s, Mercury Marine took full control of the brand. Mariner motors are almost identical to Mercury, differing only in logos and color schemes. Mariner was one of the first brands to introduce Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI), making their motors more fuel-efficient and powerful. Due to their reliability and ease of maintenance, Mariner motors were widely used by military and rescue services. In the 2000s, Mercury Marine began to reduce the production of Mariner, focusing on the main Mercury brand, but they are still found in Europe and Asia. In the U.S., however, Mariner remains rare as American consumers preferred Mercury. Thus, Mariner is a unique brand that evolved from collaboration with Yamaha to full absorption by Mercury, remaining a reliable choice for boat owners worldwide.
